Sonographer regulation

Sonographer Regulation

The ASA advocates for the recognition and advancement of the sonography profession through the development of regulation that raises professional standards and supports high quality health outcomes for patients.

Over the past five years, the ASA has strongly advocated for all sonographers to be regulated under the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme (NRAS), through the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia (MRPBA).

This change would bring sonographers together with other diagnostic imaging professions, and introduce important safety and quality mechanisms such as recency of practice requirements, enforceable standards of practice, and a centralised complaint mechanism, which are currently missing.

As part of this work, the ASA - together with other members of the Working Group for Sonographer Regulation – developed a comprehensive submission presenting the case for national regulation under the NRAS. The ASA has also engaged extensively with Ministers, governments, and industry stakeholders highlighting the benefits to public health and safety.

Despite widespread support for sonographer regulation, this work has been challenging due to competing government priorities, and the need for both federal and individual state/territory governments to support this change.

Recognising the current political and government landscape, the ASA has decided to adapt its approach towards this goal.

While the ASA will continue to pursue regulation of the sonography profession under the NRAS, we will also explore complementary opportunities to raise the quality and standards of the profession and help ensure patient safety. This work, which is still being defined in consultation with key stakeholders, may include activities such as developing a scope of practice for sonographers.

The ASA remains committed to working with the sector to advance the profession and uphold the highest standards of practice and patient care.

We will continue to do this through strategic partnerships, professional development initiatives, advocating for regulatory reforms, and fostering a sense of community among sonographers.
